Wildlife

Hyalite is home to many species of wildlife from big critters like elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep and grizzly bears to small ones such as pikas, weasels, and marten. In addition, many bird species can be found throughout the canyon.

Please be respectful of wildlife and enjoy watching them from a distance. Wild animals are unpredictable and can be dangerous if approached.

There are two bear species in Hyalite – black bears and grizzly bears – and both should be treated with caution. Always carry bear spray (and know how to use it). Secure your food, toiletries, and any other items with an odor in a bear-proof manner at night or when leaving them unattended. Acceptable methods for food storage are to keep these items in a hard-sided vehicle, bear canisters or bear-proof horse panniers, or to hang everything in a tree 10 feet up and 4 feet out.
